Helping the Homeless, Impoverished and Disabled
For low-income families and the disabled, Vitality Unlimited owns and manages Pinion Apartments (26 units) and Mountain Shadows Apartments (24 units) in Elko, and is in the process of acquiring the only affordable housing facility (10 units) in Wells. Two single-family homes in Elko, and a factory-built duplex project with supportive services for disabled homeless (6 units) are also evidence of Vitality Unlimited’s commitment to provide community members in need with the comforts of home.
Also in 1998, Vitality Center acquired and remodeled an existing Elko facility as an 8-bed transitional home for male and female patients in recovery from alcohol and other drug abuse. In 1999, it added two more transitional care homes, Phoenix Houses I and II, in Sun Valley, Nevada.
Vitality Center has conducted ongoing home rehabilitation and weatherization projects since 1999, using federal and other grant funding. This has allowed seniors and other low-income residents to make necessary repairs and upgrades to their homes and facilities for improved cost and energy efficiency.
The Department of Business and Industry Housing Division awarded two large housing project grants to Vitality Center in April 2000. Mountain Shadows Apartments is a 24-unit complex to provide subsidized housing for low-income tenants. This project was completed and occupied in late 2001.
Vitality Center purchased a single-family home in Elko in 2000 that it rehabilitated for use as single-family, low-income housing. A second home has since been added and a factory-built duplex project with supportive services for disabled homeless (6 units) are also evidence of Vitality Unlimited’s commitment to provide community members in need with the comforts of home.
In 2002, Vitality Center purchased its third and fourth properties in Sun Valley, Nevada, near its existing two Phoenix House transitional homes, for use as additional transitional homes for recovering alcohol/drug treatment clients. The new properties were named Phoenix Houses III and IV.
Vitality Unlimited is currently engaged on a capital project to build a new headquarters and community services facility. This new facility will allow Vitality Unlimited to consolidate Elko-based operations more efficiently and cost-effectively under one roof and increase its residential treatment capacity.
In 2006, Phoenix House homes were transformed into facilities for ACTIONS – Adolescents Committed to Independence, Opportunity and a New Start. This residential treatment program for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 offers a safe haven where participants can recover from substance abuse and claim their future.
